1998 Toyota Camry V6

Seen before on here, but having made contact with the 79yr-old owner I went to view it as he’s likely to be selling it soon. Inevitably it has a few old man scrapes and dinks and I’m not sure it’s tidy enough to be a viable long-term keeper, but the attraction for me is that it would eventually yield many spares for my similar coloured Sport (I need a better driver’s door, for example). Also making it an interesting proposition is the fact that the V6 engine is worth a reasonable bit as a donor for an MR2 Mk2 conversion. However I’d rather keep it complete for as long as possible, or at least until the MoT runs out, but at least that’s an option if I need to make a bit of money out of it.

He let me have a drive in it, my first go in a V6 Camry. Wow, it’s quick! Wet roads and poor tyres made me a little cautious, but the way it picks up and the noise it makes is really rather impressive.

My offer and the price the owner was hoping for are a little way apart at the moment, but he was very realistic and kept telling me that I would end up with it somehow. I think he needs a bit of time to find a smaller automatic car that he can get in and out of easily and I’m not desperate for it right now. Both he and his daughter were really friendly, I was pleased to meet them and dealing with people like them makes me remember why I prefer messing around with older cars and not having to face slick-suited new-car salesmen.
