86207 Crewe 7th March 1981

Another old print scan re-hashed, this time 86209 waiting at Crewe to head south at 19:15 on 7th March 1981. By 1981 most loco 's had the domino conversions to the former headcode blinds.

Built at Doncaster works the former E3125 was new to traffic on 25th November 1965. After renumbering to 86209 in 1974 it was named "City of Coventry" in the late 70's. It spent it's first 35 years on the West Coast AC lines before moving over to Anglia early 2000 where it was put to use working between Norwich and London Liverpool St. When those services moved over to Class 90's and Mk3 coaches the 86 became surplus and was withdrawn in September 2004. Unusually it was broken up by the Boreham Scrap Co at Boreham, Essex, the work completed by 1st May 2005.

On 23/01/75, whilst working 1S18, the 22:15 Euston - Glasgow 86209 collided with 83003 (1A81, the 19:10 Manchester - Euston) near Watford which was foul of the down main. The 83 had been derailed by a steel pallet that had fallen from a car components train which had been subject to a robbery attempt earlier that night. The 86 was knocked down the embankment where it stayed until recovered a few week later. Surprisingly after such bad damage once back at Crewe works it was repaired at a cost of £25,000 .
