25002 Swindon Works 12th March 1981

A scan from a print so lacking in quality but the subject is worth adding here. With Swindon Works A shop behind 25002 & 25005 (31274 to the right) await entry for stripping prior to scrapping on 12th March 1981, 5 days after arrival at the works. At this time a number of early Scottish allocated 25's made the long trip south to meet their fate.

History tells us the Derby built Sulzer was new to Thornaby on May 1st 1961 as D5152. It spent time at numerous depots including Carlisle, Longsight, Wigan Springs Branch and Glasgow's Eastfield from where it was withdrawn in December 1st 1980. 25002 was then stored at Eastfield with 25005 until being towed to Swindon Works on March 6th & 7th 1981. By mid April 1981 the 20 year old locomotive had been broken up.
