85004 Glasgow Central 27th March 1982

I believe I took this shot of AL5 85004 whilst on an open Bristol to Inverness freebie ticket which was part of a Young Persons railcard offer. We had just come up from Birmingham New Street behind this classic AC machine which had hauled 1S19, the 21:25 Bristol Temple Meads to Glasgow Central sleepers forward from Birmingham New Street. From here my notes say we headed to Inverness and then onto Aberdeen. Back to London overnight somehow as I have shot at St Pancras 24 hours later! Apparently we had 10 clips on the ticket and I remember a few stroppy guards not agreeing with our interpretation of our route home!

The 1961 built loco was delivered from Doncaster works as E3059 and spent all its years on the West Coast. In 1974 it was renumbered to 85004 which it retained until 1989 when it was modified to a dedicated freight loco by RFD and became 85111. Being render obsolete by new Class 90's it was withdrawn in March 1990 and eventually broken up in September 1992 by MC Metals who operated a scrap yard at Glasgow Works, Springburn, just a few miles away from Glasgow Central where the picture was taken at 06:12 on 27th March 1982
