313219 Littlehampton 16th May 2022

A trip on some old 313's this week of which 19 units still operate for Southern on Castaway services between Portsmouth and Seaford. Here 313219 working diagram BI708 waits time at Littlehampton which is a hot spot for the units in summer 2022. Twelve diagrams operate each day which can be obtained here: Class 313 Diagrams

(With thanks to the excellent Part Time Spotter website for the information)

313219 (as 313019) was one of 64 such units new to Hornsea depot in 1976/7 having been built at BREL York for Great Northern Inner Suburban services out of Kings Cross and Moorgate. In 1988 the first 23 unit were transferred to work North London, & Watford locals and renumbered into the 3131xx series. They worked on these trains until being replaced by Class 378's in 2010. From June of that year they were all refurbish and renumbered again as 313201 - 313220 and sent south for the Coastline services based off of Brighton depot. Unit 18 never made the move and scrapped as did the rest of the 313 fleet (apart from EMTMS test unit 313121)

Rumours indicate they will be withdrawn in late 2022, having been in use for 46 years and the oldest trains on the network.
