47816 Bath 29th August 2001

On the approaches to Bath Spa 47816 "Bristol Bath Road Quality Assured" hauls 1A43, the 09:20 Plymouth to London Paddington on the morning of 29th August 2001. The parks department always do the city proud with their flowers and displays and for a number of years the Wells Road roundabout was a popular place for them to put on a display. A tricky shot to get right, I was always pleased I got the bus but annoyed the Vauxhall Nova and it's open tailgate came into the frame.

The 47 was a longtime Western engine having been new to Cardiff Canton in January 1965. 1970 renumbering saw it become 47066, and after the inevitable ETH conversion in October 1986; 47661. After a short spell at Glasgow's Eastfield it then became an Inter City long range fuel tank fitted passenger loco which saw it used back on the Western as well as Cross Country routes. After its use with FGW finished in late 2002 it headed back to the leasing company and used as required in various shunting rolls, spending a long spell with FLHH at Crewe for shunting but as it was never TPWS fitted it mainline days were over. Surprisingly it still survives at Crewe Basford Hall yard but dumped out of use still in its faded FGW green livery.

I believe the bus to be G905 TWS (9005) which ended its days in Cornwall apparently. It was scrapped many years ago.
