60010, 60081 Twerton 14th March 2003

60010 hauls a demic 60081 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel" which had disgraced itself earlier that morning at the LPG terminal at Avonmouth. Running some 7 hours late the "gas tanks" as the train was known can be seen on the approaches to Bath with 6O10, the 03:00 BP Avonmouth to Eastleigh service on 14th March 2003. The green machine was soon back in traffic and lasted until 2005 when a more serious failure caused a piston to come through the block near Chester, it never ran again and was stored at Toton for many years. It's since been preserved by LSL as a static exhibit at Margate. 60010 is still in traffic as a DB loco.

This LPG gas train which carried Butane and Propane from the B.P Wytch Farm oil wells in Dorest was railed from Furzebrook to the docks at Avonmouth. It started running in 1991, initially with only a few trains each week using Petroleum Sector Class 47’s and then as Class 60’s came on stream these became the regular motive power for many years with 11 trains a week running by the mid 1990's. Class 58’s were used for a while and finally Class 66’s became the norm in the later years. As production techniques changed at the oil fields the trains slowly reduced until finally petering out in June 2005. The wagons were quickly scraped as the tank barrels dating from the late 60's were life expired.
