37275 Bassaleg 20th March 1997

37275 "Oor Wullie" hauls 7B49, the 12:25 Newport ADJ to Machen ballast empties formed of Sealion hoppers on 20th March 1997. The Machen branch runs 4.5 miles from Park Junction along the truncated line that went on to Caerphilly via numerous collieries. As these shut the line was slowly cut back to the quarry at Machen with Trethomas being the last operational pit on the line which had sadly shut in March 85. The viaduct at Bassaleg, a suburb of Newport is the world's oldest operational railway viaduct and was built over the Ebbw River for the Rumney Railway in 1826.

The popular 37275 was painted into retro BR blue livery in the early 90's and named after the Scottish comic strip character from the Scottish newspaper "The Sunday Post" Withdrawn in January 1999 it eventually ended up in preservation.
