87016 Caerwent 22nd December 2004

87016, the first Class 87/0 to be broken up is seen during an advanced state of cutting at Caerwent on 22nd December 2004. The loco had arrived by road from Willesden, being delivered to the JT Landscapes scrapping facility at the former MOD site in Monmouthshire, South Wales on Monday 13th September 2004. In the background 312708 is being stripped.

87016 was new to traffic in March 1974 having been been built at BREL Crewe works for the West Coast electrification extension from Weaver Junction to Glasgow. With privatisation it passed to Virgin Trains who continued to use the 5000hp machine up and down the 25Kv system linking London Euston to Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool until it was withdrawn in July 2004.

Of the 36 built 24 are still in existence, 3 have been preserved and 21 exported to Bulgaria for further use.

Taken on an official visit.
