76049 Ashburys 9th June 1977
Taken from a Guide Bridge to Manchester Piccadilly service, 76049 is seen with coke hoppers in Ashburys yard on Thursday 9th June 1977. A few of us had been to Reddish depot looking for more members of the early 1950's designed 1500v DC electrics which once number 58 examples. Having been built only a few miles away at Gorton Works in October 1952 it had an uneventful career until August 1960 when as the then E26049 it was named "Jason". The 11 other steam heat fitted loco's were also given classic Greek names at the same time. The name from 76049 and the others were removed in 1970 once passenger service were discontinued over the route.
With the run down of the Class in the late 1970's 76049 was a target for early withdrawal as it was vacuum only and became one of 6 switched off as surplus in November 1980 and dumped at Reddish depot. In July 1981 the closure of the Woodhead route spelt the end for the remaining 35 vintage electric that were still in service and along with 76049 hauled to Rotherham scrap merchant, CF Booths for disposal. By March 1983 the old veteran 76049 had been reduced to scrap.
This was the only Class 76 I was ever hauled by when it featured on the "Three Way Special" tour both ways across the Pennines on 14th October 1978. Tour Info here:
