Crane fly larva, Elgin Co, Ontario PFN
Crane fly larva.
Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.
Yep--they're kinda ugly. I found this guy while attempting to dig a plant up beside a stream. I couldn't believe how big he was, considering he's just going to be a scrawny Crane fly. Over 2 inches long!
Crane fly larvae are semi-aquatic, living in mud or damp soil, feeding on dead plant material. Totally harmless, but creepy looking to most people.
Scanned from original Kodachrome film.
