#aband0n_all_h0pe, 2016-2017, pigeon egg from disturbed nest, salvaged wood, carved XPS foam, hydrocal, resin, acrylic paint, pigment, concrete, mirror

This work was created for my solo exhibition 'Date with Disaster', which explored the materiality and forms of post-industrial ruins in the urban landscape. Although these sites are in the process of being reclaimed by nature, there is little evidence of other living creatures. Graffiti marks the presence of other humans, whereas the startling flutter of wings reveals the presence of pigeons. These adaptable birds are maligned as 'rats of the sky', yet their ability to prosper among detritus and destruction offers a glimmer of hope. The decaying sites that these birds occupy have become popular internet tropes. As such, the title for this work was drawn from the language used on internet sites dedicated to the urban exploration of modern-day ruins.
