Extraction
Extraction is work that addresses the commodification of the underwater world—how sea life is taken from the ocean and placed inside a glass box. The creation of the "sea on land" taps into our culture's fascination with nature and its desire not only to own it, but to control it. Fish tanks, whether in homes or aquariums, are created to resemble a natural underwater scene; however, there is nothing natural about their assimilation. These photos are meant to fool the audience with perspective, bringing each viewer in and out of the tank or aquarium while presenting images of what many see as beautiful alongside images of raw consumerism.
