During the 1760's this was the charcoal house, which was used to store charcoal needed for the forge which was located next store. The forge was abandoned around 1795 and fell into disrepair. John Smith rebuilt the gristmill prior to 1831, The major grains processed were wheat, corn, rye, and buckwheat. Peter Smith operated the mill and updated it again in 1863. By 1870, the gristmill was reported as operating with three grinding stones.
