Dragoon Pistols on Display at Morristown National Historical Park
Mounted officers and most horse soldiers carried a pair of pistols stored in holsters that hung from the front of the saddle. Pistols for the Continental Army came from a number of sources. Some were made by American gunsmiths, or acquired from France, while others were captured from the British. The front Light Dragoon Pistol was made in Ireland in the late 18th Century. The lock bears Dublin Castle, a crown and "GR" marks and the barrel a crowned "GR", arrow, crossed scepters, and CN 2729 (the Irish registration marks). The stock bears "RT I E N" marks. It has a walnut stock with a brass butt cap. The Dragoon Pistol in black was made in France in 1733. It too has a walnut stock and a brass butt cap.
