Two 18th Century Brooches

Trinkets or ornaments of dress were enjoyed by 16th Century women. Some were considered stylish while others , like brooches were worn for sentimental reasons.

The brooch on the left of the picture was considered a devotional brooch. The one shown here is painted ivory,

Brooch with Portrait of the Royal British Governor Lewis Morris. He was governor of New Jersey from 1738 to 1746. The brooch is painted, with a brass frame and dates to the middle of the 18th Century
