Powhatan Burial Ground at Jamestown Settlement, VA

After initial mourning the Powhatan would lay their citizens to rest in one of three ways. The first was the use of what most modern Americans would call a traditional grave. The second Powhatan burial practice is that of cremation. The final and most fascinating burial method is known as scaffold burials. The dead were disemboweled then wrapped in skins with their prized possessions before being laid on a wooden scaffold several feet in the air.
