Milliner and Tailor and The Golden Ball Silversmith Shops, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Both of these shops are located on the north side of Duke of Gloucester Street, less than a block west of the Capitol.

The original building on the Golden Ball site (Lot 53) was built by House of Burgesses member, John Holloway, in 1724. On August 30, 1765, John Carter leased the west section of the lot to jeweler and silversmith, James Craig.

The Golden Ball offers reproductions of rings, earrings, charms and pendants in sterling silver and 14 karat gold, in addition to fine brass and pewter goods. Some of the pieces are hand-made and one of a kind.

No matter what a person’s social or economic status, everyone was a potential customer of a tailor. As a result, the local Milliner and Tailor was a busy shop in Williamsburg Virginia.
