General Court Chambers in the Capital Building in Williamsburg VA

The General Court was the supreme court of the colony and was possessed of a wide jurisdictional scope. The appellate function of the General Court consisted primarily in hearing appeals from the County Courts.

The walnut seat made chairwise for the Governor is surmounted by the arms of Queen Anne. The Queen's arms were copied in England from an original in the Earl's Court College of Heralds, London.

The judges of these superior courts were the most powerful men in the colony. The bench of the General Court consisted of the members of the Governor's Council with the Governor as presiding judge. Any five of them formed a quorum. This right of the Council to be the judges of the superior court of the colony had been granted in the Charter of 1618. The members of the Council received their appointment from the king.
