The Dome on The New Jersey State House
Domes in American culture denote gathering places, and serve as powerful symbols for the home of representative government and the democratic ideals. At top is a cupola, reminiscent of the first State House’s bell tower with bells being rung to announce when the Legislature was meeting. The dome was re-gilded in 1999, with schoolchildren contributing approximately $48,000 for the gold leaf through a program called “Dimes for the Dome.”
