The pulpit has often a canopy which is highly decorated The canopy is not purely decorative, but can have a useful acoustic effect in projecting the priest's voice to the congregation below. On the canopy ceiling, you will see a mosaic of a dove representing the Holy Spirit, whose divine inspiration is sought by the preacher.
