Brumidi Fresco on Capital Dome
At the center of the dome is a fresco entitled The Apotheosis of Washington. It was painted in 1865 by Constantino Brumidi. Each of the figures are 15 feet tall. The figures show George Washington rising to the heavens in glory, flanked by female figures representing Liberty and Victory/Fame and thirteen maidens symbolizing the original states.
