Statue of St. Patrick

On the north side of the sanctuary is this marble statue of St. Patrick. The saint is wearing a chasuble, the chief vestment of the Mass and an ancient miter. Patrick is depicted as carrying a book of gospels and a shamrock in his left hand. Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity, and it became his symbol. This piece was executed by John Angel the sculptor who designed the statuettes for the baldachin.
