St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral was not always a cathedral, nor was it always known as St. Francis Parish. On November 19, 1981, Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Metuchen, naming Auxiliary Bishop Theodore McCarrick of New York as its first Bishop.
