Chakri Dancers

Chakri means ‘Chakkar’ (Circle) rotation in the Hindi language. Chakri is one of the most popular folk dances of the Kanjar tribe. The Kanjar inhabit some parts of the Kota and Baran districts of Rajasthan. Chakri dance is performed in almost all marriages and festivals in the Haroti region of Rajasthan, and exclusively by the women folk of the Kanjar tribe. It is also their main source of livelihood.

It is believed that the tribes of the Baran and Kota districts were the first who came up with this dance and slowly it became famous and moved to other parts of Rajasthan. Chakri dance is also believed to be the same as the Raai dance of the Beriyas tribe of Madhya Pradesh.

Chakri dance involves a series of fast and vigorous spinning movements with the beats of the Dholak drum, involving tradition Rajasthani folk songs - 22/11/2015
