Calder and Hebble Navigation

The Calder and Hebble navigation is a wide canal able to take boats up to 14ft wide and 57ft 6ins in length, it runs 21 miles from Wakefield up to Sowerby Bridge where it joins the Rochdale Canal. There are 27 locks and as almost half of the navigation is along the course of the River Calder there are also a number of flood lock. Work began in 1758 to make the River Calder navigable above Wakefield and the navigation to Sowerby Bridge was completed in 1770.
The Halifax Arm followed the course of Hebble Brook and ran for 2.5miles from Salter Hebble to the basin at Bailey Hall near Halifax Station it had 14 locks and five bridges and was opened in 1828. By 1942 the canal was little used and it was drained and eventually filled in.
