For Rachel’s birthday today we strolled into the village hoping to find a nice cup of coffee. We took Merlin with us. The coffee shop was closed but I did find an extraordinary, ancient car in the woods, doors open and leaves scattered throughout the seats and boot. Merlin wouldn’t go anywhere near it.

It must have been there for years. There’s no track in or out and it’s surrounded by forest. It has a kind of 1950s Cadillac style. I went back there this afternoon to take photos.

Since it was Rachel’s birthday, the 28th of her life, I convinced her to go out onto the lake with me. She’d love it, I said. As we got near the lake I realised I’d need a paddle of some sort. The only thing I could find was a 6ft high branch. Content that I could punt with it, we boarded the boat and floated off.

The holes in my plan became apparent as we went deeper into the lake and the stick no longer touched the ground. I attempted to row with the stick. Rachel had a small stick too. We rowed together. Instead of going anywhere we just went round in circles.

I told Rachel to stop rowing and leave it all to me. I attempted to maneuver us with the one stick, switching from side to side to keep us going straight. The problem was, since the stick was so long, every time I lifted it up and changed sides, I threw water all over Rachel. After a while we gave in to mother nature. We sat back and enjoyed the tranquility.

When I noticed that we were sinking, I navigated us towards shallower water and managed to punt us home again. The bottom of the boat was pretty much full of water at this point.

Having said all of this, the period when we floated about was actually lovely. We were surrounded by trees (see the photo below), tranquility and birds. We remarked how people in the real world would probably be at work right now. I decided I wasn’t keen on the real world.

Tonight’s birthday celebrations will involved champagne and Love Actually – exciting times.

Today’s Photo – The Lake

This is our lake!! She’s a little beauty. There’s a lot of carp in here but we didn’t see any.

The was actually the flattest, most lifeless HDR I’ve ever created. Thank the gods I have Nik’s Color Efex to bring it to life. Processed in Nik’s HDR Efex.
