Andersonville Prison Camp

AH1.H.4.3 Analyze the social and religious

conflicts, movements and reforms that affected

the United States from colonization through

Reconstruction in terms of participants, strategies,

opposition, and results (e.g., Second Great

Awakening, Transcendentalism, abolition,

temperance, mental illness, prisons, education,

etc.).

The Andersonville Prison Camp was the worst of the Confederate prisons. It was overcrowded to the point where there was not enough food and supplies for the prisoners. This is a picture of a captured Union soldier that was held at that prison. Students need to be aware of POW conditions even dating back to the Civil War to understand why there are now restrictions and health codes for prisons.
