Al Kuntillah is on the eastern side of the Egyptian Sinai close to the border with Israel, and about 60 km north from the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. The terrain is a low rocky plateau about 500 metres above sea-level, with wide wadi-like ephemeral river channels.
