Mysterious House 1

We spent two nights and a day at the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, staying at the village of Hrensko. It is a popular hiking area of sandstone and tall trees in the Czech Republic. The Mysterious House (name on the sign) was up a side canyon opposite our pension. We didn't notice it at first but saw it from our bedroom window. The information below is a rough version of what was on the sign:

This building was built in 1905 as an industrial site for production of acetylene gas which was used for lighting. Since the chemical process is fairly dangerous and requires large amounts of water, the building was built on a rocky platform in a small lateral canyon near the creek. It was built of hand-carved sandstone blocks in the style of a medieval castle. As electrification proceeded the gasworks was abandoned and the building deteriorated.

the Czechoslovak state sold the building to a private owner in the 1960s. However, the promise to renovate didn't happen and it deteriorated further.

The current owner bought the ruin in 2004. His intention was to renovate the building to its original style. He found a 100 year old photo taken of the original building in Decin museum. The building has been completely renovated and can be rented out as a holiday home.

Thanks to Imke for suggesting we visit this place.
