Lord Howe Island Woodhen on Mt Gower

Day 6 on Lord Howe Island was the one we were all waiting for - climbing Mt Gower (875m) - said to be one of the best and hardest day walks in Australia.

Twelve from our group did the climb along with another 13 making it one of the biggest groups Jack Shick had ever guided up there. It is about an 8-9hr trip.

The summit is known as the mist forest and contains trees, ferns, mosses and orchids seen nowhere else on the planet. We were lucky not to have the mist but wonderful views.

We also saw a couple of endangered Lord Howe Woodhens - they are very friendly and are similar to the NZ Weka. For more information: www.lordhoweisland.info/library/woodhen.pdf

I went to LHI as part of a fundraising trip for the Climate Council of Australia:
