Cheeky Weka

The three of us hitch-hiked to one of the cars, collected the other car and then waited at the base of the Kelly Range for the others in our group.

While waiting and eating lunch, this very bold Weka harrassed us trying to grab at anything it thought was edible including Harry's Volley (shoe) and my bandaged toe! It didn't give up until we left (about an hour).

The weka is a flightless bird species of the rail family. It is endemic to New Zealand, where four subspecies are recognized. Weka are sturdy brown birds, about the size of a chicken. As omnivores, they feed mainly on invertebrates and fruit.
