Nancy, the baby fruit bat

Last Sunday my son found a baby black flying fox under a parked car near our home.

With a stick, he helped it into my camera bag (which he was using) and brought it home. He had to be careful as some bats carry a type of rabies called lyssavirus. We called Bat Conservation and Rescue and a lady came and settled it down by wrapping it up and giving it a baby bottle teat to simulate its mother. It was only about 10 days old. It must have fallen from its mother while she was feeding.

There is a colony nearby at Perrin Park, Toowong, and the week before, council had cut down some branches as many people find the bats a problem.

My son was asked to name the bat, a female. He named her Nancy. Nancy will be looked after by someone until she is old enough to fend for herself.
