Auf einem kleinen Hügel am Ufer des Meeres liegt die befestigte Altstadt Dalt Vila (zu Deutsch „Obere Stadt“).
Einstmals gehörte sie zu den wichtigsten Küstenstädten im Mittelmeerraum. Die massiven Wehrmauern von Dalt Vila , die heute noch das Stadtbild von Ibiza prägen, wurden unter der Maurischen Herrschaft (9. bis 13. Jahrhundert) errichtet. Da die Befestigungen von Dalt Vila gegen die Piratenangriffe und die der Ottomanen nicht ausreichten wurde die Festung wurde die Festung durch Philipp II (16. Jahrhundert)ausgebaut.
On a small hill on the shore of the sea lies the fortified old town of Dalt Vila (in German “Upper City”).
It was once one of the most important coastal cities in the Mediterranean. The massive defensive walls of Dalt Vila, which still characterize the cityscape of Ibiza today, were built under the Moorish rule (9th to 13th centuries). Since the fortifications of Dalt Vila were not sufficient against the pirate attacks and those of the Ottomans, the fortress was expanded by Philip II (16th century).
