Die Gewöhnliche Wegwarte ist eine ausdauernde, krautige Pflanze, die Wuchshöhen von 30 bis 140 cm erreicht. Sie besitzt eine tiefreichende Pfahlwurzel. Die Stängel stehen sparrig-ästig. Die Zungenblüten sind himmelblau und jeweils nur für einen Tag geöffnet. Die Wurzelzichorie wurde ab Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts auch als Kaffeegetränk („Muckefuck“) verwendet. Das bekannteste Handelsprodukt mit einem Anteil an Wurzelzichorie unter seinen Inhaltsstoffen ist Caro-Kaffee.
