Die Qarawīyīn-Moschee inmitten der Medina von Fès-el-Bali ist die historisch und politisch bedeutendste Moschee Marokkos.
Die Qarawīyīn-Moschee wurde im Jahre 857 (oder 859) von der wohlhabenden Kaufmannstochter Fatima al-Fihri, deren Vater zu Beginn des 9. Jahrhunderts aus Qairawān nach Fès ausgewandert war, gestiftet.
Die angeschlossene Universität al-Qarawīyīn ist wohl die älteste Universität in der islamischen Welt.
Al Quaraouiyine mosque was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859 with an associated madrasa( Islamic school ), which subsequently became one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the historic Muslim world.
Successive dynasties expanded the Al Quaraouiyine mosque until it became the largest in Africa, with a capacity of 22,000 worshipers
