Capuchin Crypt, Brno

Capuchins had a special method of burying their dead. After a funeral in the church above the crypt the dead were carried downstairs. The bottom of the oak coffin was pulled out and the corpse fell on to the bare ground. Under his head were placed one or two bricks. The coffin was then saved for the next funeral. It was one of the practices of poverty typical of the Capuchin Order.

153 friars were buried here in this way, 24 of them are preserved today.
