PUFFIN // FRATERCULA ARCTICA (29cm)
ENDEARING AND UNMISTAKABLE seabird, seen on Skomer Island. South Wales. Where you can see hundreds of them, what a joy. BUT THIS MAY SEEM A LOT, BUT IT REPRESENTS A FRACTION OF THE NUMBERS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN PRESENT A CENTURY OR SO AGO. Reasons for the decline include overfishing and pollution of the marine environment.
AS well as Skomer, other spectacular spots are those on Hermaness and Noss, both on Shetland, and the best time to visit a colony is in late June and July, when birds like above will be returning to the nest with beaks full of sandeels.
