PINK-BACKED PELICAN // PELECANUS RUFESCENS (130-160CM)

GAMBIA TOUR 2018

==================

HUGE PELICAN, rather drab grey looking, with little sign of the so-called pink back. Favors any aquatic habitat, including the sea. A safe landing captured above, this was one of seven birds seen. Was very surprised at how little effort was used to get them into flight, unlike our mute swans. A joy to watch, they teamed up with spoonbills and yellow billed storks, to form a wall of open bills, so if a fish dashes from one bird its straight into another bill.................... PLEASE take a look zoomed in!!
