Spit

The Spit (An Oitir) is a shingle bar extending approx. 1 mile into Loch Fyne from Otter Ferry, restricting boat access to the upper reaches of the loch to a safe channel beyond the buoy which can be seen in the distance to the left of the spit.

Before venturing out onto the spit it's essential that you know the state of the tide, since it rushes into the loch very quickly.

A ferry used to run across the loch (from Otter Ferry to West Otter Ferry) from the 1700's right up until 1948 and both piers still exist.

It's thought that Otter Ferry comes from the Gaelic 'Oitir', rather than from the prevalence of otters.

There's also a superb pub at Otter Ferry - The Oystercatcher.........
