The old railway

Opened in 1887 the Alnwick to Cornhill branch line always struggled to find passengers with the area being quite sparsely populated. In addition the geography dictated that a number of stations were at a distance from the village they served.

It lasted as a passenger line from 1887 to 1930, with freight traffic on this southern (Alnwick) section of the line finally ceasing in 1953.
