C&NW 5069, Arcadia, IA
A typical day of railfanning the C&NW... chase an eastbound in low winter light for 50 miles, get to the top of Arcadia Hill, shoot a couple of westbounds, find one you like, and chase him back to Mo Valley. Simpler times...
In the 1970's Union Pacific would add CCS leaders to C&NW trains at Fremont. The story I heard somewhere at work was shortly after the C&NW GP50's were delivered they were equipped with UP CCS components from retired/stored UP DD40's. So these GP50's were a common sight on Overland Route trains east of North Platte thru the early 1990's until being bumped by UP Dash 8's and SD60/60M deliveries that were dual equipped with CCS and ATC. I never got tired of shooting GP50's as the MoPac fleet was a daily sight when I was in Texarkana.
