DESCRIPTION

A large spotted cat, with powerful limbs, heavy torso, thick neck and a long tail. Short sleek coat tawny yellow to reddish brown, darker sometimes black in wetter forested habitats. Spots grouped into rosettes on torso and upper limbs, smaller scattered spots on lower limbs and head.

HABITAT

Every type except interior of large deserts. The ONLY large predator in the rain forests .

BREEDING

1-4 cubs year-round ,but birth peak occurs during rainy season. Gestation is 90-105 days

FACTS

The Leopard eats whatever form of animal protein is available, from Termites to Waterbuck. Where humans have depleted prey the Leopard turns to livestock and domestic dogs.

The Leopard caches its kills in trees to prevent Lions & Hyenas from taking its food.

The Leopard is solitary and territorial but sometimes shares hunting ranges.

The black phase of this species is called a BLACK PANTHER.
