20240309 (8)_Lesser_Spotted_Woodpecker

After two hours of failed stakeout for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker at a known drumming tree near Acres Down in the New Forest, Hampshire, we decided to cut our losses and use a period of brighter weather to look for Goshawks. However, as we made our way through oaks near the car park we heard the unmistakable call of a Lesser Spot and quickly located it calling and drumming above us, providing marvellous views in full sunlight. Dedication, effort and knowledge all help in birding but sometimes a dash of luck is better!
