20231020 (25)_Gyrfalcon
An old pre-digital photograph rephotographed. My favourite bird species, this huge Arctic falcon visits Britain increasingly rarely as the climate warms. This individual at Carn Gloose at the toe-end of Cornwall was available for some days and we had excellent scope views of it from the coast path on 9 March 2000. In return the alert bird got me onto a hunting Stoat dashing about on the slope near its rocky perch. It was my wife's first Gyrfalcon and at the time she had yet to see Merlin, Hobby and Peregrine - all much commoner than this massive hunter. This sort of "backwards listing" occurs frequently when partners take up with manic twitchers.
