20230903 (200)_9917_Sopwith_Pup

Possibly derived to an extent from the successful Sopwith "One and a half Strutter" two-seat biplane, the Pup was so much the child of that design that the Sopwith company referred to it as the "pup" of the former machine, and it stuck! It was Britain's answer to improving German scouts of WWI and with its Vickers machine gun firing through the propeller, huge wing area and small fuselage, it was an instant hit in the scout role. This example was rebuilt from a post-war two-seat Sopwith Dove and is seen taking off from Old Warden to display during the Shuttleworth Trust's Bedfordshire Vintage Airshow.
