This Sherman shown in British service has the welded hull with extra length that was devised to accommodate one of the engine variations used to maximise production. This M4A4 has a multi-bank engine - essentially four truck engines bolted together - that required the extra room. However it retains the short 75mm gun of the original model, narrow tracks, original suspension and projecting fairings in the glacis for crew hatches, which made sadly effective shot-traps for incoming rounds.
