The Matilda II and Churchill "I" tanks (for co-operation with attacking infantry) contrast with the lightly armoured but speedy Stuart. The Matilda and Churchill were slow but both enjoyed thick armour which extended the life of each when faced with faster German tanks with guns of 50mm: the later Panzer IVs and the heavy tanks were however more than a match for each. Matildas left service by the middle of the war but Churchills continued and provided an excellent platform for specialist engineer vehicles such as the AVRE and ARK.
