20220808 (10)_Three-toed_Woodpecker

One of the most unusual, with its three-toed feet instead of the usual four in an X-pattern, of all woodpeckers: there is a Nearctic version split recently as a separate species. It is one of the more difficult woodpeckers to see in Europe, so on finding one in the grounds of the Bear Centre (Wild Brown Bear Oy) near the Finnish/Russian border I followed it carefully for almost an hour to get a satisfactory set of pictures of a very much appreciated bird.
