Dotterel is a plover species, a shorebird that has abandoned shores for moorland and mountain. In Britain they breed on the high tops of the Cairngorms and other very high mountains; they are commoner in Scandinavia but no more accessible in the breeding season. They are also unusual in that the male incubates and looks after the young while the female disappears off to find another mate and lay another clutch. For that reason it is reasonable to suppose that the moulting adult, accompanying this juvenile, that I went to see on Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire on their Autumn migration was a male.
